Staying Safe on Independence Day!
In honor of America’s 249th Independence Day, here are five fun facts about Independence Day along with some public health tips to keep you and your family safe:
- In 2024, the U.S. spent nearly 470 million dollars on imported fireworks for Independence Day celebrations.1 Remember to always leave the fireworks to the professionals and to have a bucket of water nearby if you use sparklers.
- In 1776, America’s population was just 2.5 million in population. Today, the population has grown to over 340.1 million people.1 Celebrate in crowds safely by staying hydrated, applying sunscreen, and knowing where first aid is available in case of emergencies.
- “The Star-Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem in 1931.2 If you’re attending outdoor ceremonies, protect your hearing during loud celebrations with earplugs.
- There have been 27 official versions of the U.S. flag throughout our history.2 When displaying flags or decorations, make sure they are placed safely away from open flames such as grills or fireworks.
- Independence Day didn’t become a federal holiday until 1870, nearly a century after the Declaration of Independence was signed.2 Take advantage of the holiday to rest, recharge, and spend time with loved ones.
KDHRC wishes everyone a safe, healthy, and joyful Independence Day!
